(English)

The Winding Road

Just behind my house is a mountain. On the mountain there is a windy road that bends and winds all the way to the top.Along this road is a local marketplace where you can and sell lots of things. The market place and the road have been around for generations and generations.

The mountains name is very beautiful, 'Winding Road Mountain'. This mountain has a very close place in the hearts of my family and the other villagers. My grandfather loves telling old stories about the mountain. He once told me that in the 1920's the Nationalist Party came through our town and decided that the main road needed repairing. Not too long after a group of explorers came to our town carrying a device no one had ever seen before. Using this device the started to surgery the area. Wherever they went, the villagers followed them to see what they were doing. Not before long they decided that a road should be built, and what’s more that it would go right by my grandfather’s house!

After some time studying the mountain, the exhibition team said the mountain had something precious inside it. The tale went that there were golden rabbits that popped gold into the river living in the mountains. There was also another tale that there was a golden millhouse inside the mountain. In the millhouse worked an old woman who would grind rice every day and night. Every night she would open the mountain door and give a bag of rice to any villagers lucky enough to meet her. When the villagers would get back home the rice would have turned to gold!

However, unfortunately no gold was ever found on the mountain. However one of the good things that came from the explorers coming to our town, is that they helped build our road. That was around 80 years ago, the mysterious road still stands proudly today.

The winding road has a history of over 100 years which ranges from before the opening up of China up until present modern day China.

When my grandparents were younger, they both had lots of dreams and hopes, but none of them were realized. One of the reasons was because it wasn’t easy for them to get to any bigger cities or towns. In fact, they have never even been to the nearby city. Now they are older and settled, so they don't mind so much any more.

Recently, our province began concentrating on improving the public works. As a result, new highways began springing up connecting the neighboring towns. The winding road was amongst one of the country roads that got turned into a highway! My family and I will never forget the summer of 2012. Dozens of bulldozers, cement trucks and other big machines all came storming up the hill helping to turn the small mountain road into a highway.

On the day that road was opened, all the workers began packing up and headed back to their homes amongst sounds of fireworks and traditional Chinese instruments. This was celebration was not just for the new road, but for the new opportunity that the road would bring to my village.

Having this road meant that workers no longer had to leave home to go to find work, work came to find them, or they could go out and come home on the same day. Also teenagers could go to and from university, the elderly could take the bus into the city, small businesses could expand to other towns. What’s more is that farmers could drive their crops and animals to the nearby towns and markets to make more profit.

Now with the new road, new dreams can be made. New dreams can be realized.

(English)

Herding Sheep

Almost every week I go over to my good friend Yu's house to help her herd her family's sheep. During the week Yu’s grandpa ties 3 of his sheep in a field so they can eat fresh grass. The field is close to my house so it's easy for me to get too.

Every Saturday and Sunday Yu, my sister and myself all go up the field to bring the sheep back to the farm. We always joke and mess around in the way up to the field. It’s always such good fun. Before we even get up to the field we can hear the sheep calling to each other. When we get to the field we release the sheep from the rope and watch as they go running back to their mother.

One day when we let the sheep go, they went running off into the field and then in a blink of an eye they disappeared. I couldn't see them anymore. It turned out they went running into the river ravine to drink some water. They must have been so thirsty because they wouldn’t leave. To get them to leave we splashed water on them and but they still didn't take any notice of us. Not until we brought their mother to the river then they all left to run up to be with her.

Then all 4 of the sheep went looking for food together. Unfortunately they went looking for food in the thistle bushes. Eventually we had to go into the prickly bushes to get them! It hurt so much.

We finally got them to leave and led them back to the farm.

It seems the sheep love coming to this field. They seem happy.

(English)

Our Village's Birthday Celebration

Each and every different place has their own traditions and customs. Through experiencing these customs you can truly experience the unique parts of each culture.

Recently I firsthand felt how rich my town’s culture is during a local ceremony to celebrate our elders.

The ceremony was held in a big hall which was decked out in red wall hangings with the Chinese character for 'life' written on them. The main table was full with delicious foods such as of dried fruit, peanuts, and Longan. Each of these food represents different meanings - all which have represent life. Today the celebration was for many an lady who was over 80 years old!

The host of the ceremony quickly introduced the occasion, and introduced the lady whose birthday it was. After that all the younger generation took turns to bow in front of the lady as a sign of respect. Then in turn she began handing red envelopes with money in them to the younger generation. Everyone was frantically trying to get one. Everyone in the room was smiling and laughing. Such fun!

After receiving Red envelopes, the younger generation started to serve ‘long life' noodles to the older generation as a sign of respect and wish them all a long and healthy life.

All throughout the banquet, everyone would take turns wishing the elderly words and blessings of good health and happiness. Not only a joyous occasion, but a good example of how respectful the Chinese people are to their elders.

(English)

An Interesting Winter

As the weather gets warmer and the New Year gets ever closer, the roadside stalls along the main streets begin to pop up again. One day as I was walking with my mother we both had a good idea - to sell New Year scrolls! In China, it is a tradition to stick up these New Year scrolls on our doors to wish wealth, happiness and good health to everyone in the household.

Each scroll has a traditional blessing on it. We can sell the scrolls for around 7-12 Chinese yuan ($1-1.80) each. Not a bad way to make some money!

After preparing all our materials (ink, wooden boards, small chairs, paper, glue, clips) we set out for the roadside. After setting up our stall we waited for our first customers. There's a famous Chinese saying called ‘know yourself, know your enemy’ (by Sun Tzu). So in that light, I went looking at all the other stalls on the road to see the competition. There were so many!!! Many selling fruit, clothes as well as some selling New Year scrolls. However I didn't give up hope because our scrolls were much cheaper and I know that most people in our village all like cheap things!

So I started to put myself to work to make sure that our business would go well. I started shouting at the top of my voice, "Come here and get New Year scrolls. One set for no more than 10 yuan! Get them before they sell out!". I couldn't believe how many people came to our stall after I advertised. Everyone was so happy to get these New Year scrolls at such good prices. My mother was also extremely busy explaining to our customers what each blessing meant.

Mum was so busy that she needed me to help her give the scrolls to the customers. How did I go from being the big boss to an assistant to the salesman!!?? However I was more than happy to help. Picking out scrolls for customers and recommending which ones were best for the bedroom and which were best for the kitchen was a lot of fun. I don't think I've ever been that busy before.

Everyone on the street was busy! Busy selling and busy buying. As the day went on the sun started to go down and myself and my mother started to pack up after a long day of work. Even though we were both exhausted, our bag was full with money. Hard work is worth it!
