Lantern Opera in Northern Sichuan is an old folk opera which is popular in the Northeast of Sichuan province. The Lantern Opera is frequently performed for the vast rural areas in the Northeast of Sichuan province since the Ming and Qing Dynasties, and it stretches without a break up till now. Lantern Opera in Northern Sichuan shows are based on folk life, there are more than 200 dramas now, aria tune consists of two classes which are Zhengdiao and Huadiao, they are from the folk song, God song, Buddha song, marriage songs, Shengyu tune and duangong tone, main features with ugly, wrestling and laughing. it is a fusion of puppets, shadow, monkey, folk dancing and other skills.

Because it was born among the people which was reflected folk life concept and aesthetic taste, so it was popular in villages, and named as "peasant drama" or "happy god". Lantern Opera in Northern Sichuan was awarded the first batch of national intangible cultural heritage by the State Council in May 2006.
