records: the cresent lake is the nearest to the sand island with the clear water and the shape like a cresent.

the water in the crescent lake is salty which is not so bitter as that in the qinghai lake. a road named “wood road”has been built along the lake to protect environment. it has not been included in the scenic spot yet.

records: the reed lake lies in the southeast of the sand island. there are about 100 ducks in the lake. these ducks from south bring the seeds of reed here, so it got the name of “region of lakes on the plateau”.

there are a lot of shrimps in the lake which are eaten by ducks. it is to be regretted that the ducks have gone to south due to the cold winter. we hope we can see them next summer.

records: when we come to the sand island, we see a tibetan at first sight. he says to us that he has several horses and brings them here in the busy season tourist season. he can make some money by these horses to be rided by tourists. he has been here since april and can gain 500 to 600 yuan every year. he feels the beauty of the scenery, but the wind is too heavy here!

records: there are more than 20 sand sculptures on the first sand sculpture festival in 2007 on the theme of “protection of nature and tibetan culture for olympic games”. there are the highest, largest, and longest sculptures on this festival. all of them are sculpted by 18 first-class sculptors, four of whom are from other countries such as new zealand, australia and canada. the sands here are easily to be sculpted. the qinghai lake ranks first in the five most beautiful lakes. the sand sculpture exhibition plays a very important role in the development of the qinghai lake. on the one hand, relevant experiences have been enriched and the fame of the scenic area has been enhanced. on the other hand, the tourist market has been enlarged to sichuan, shanxi and ningxia. 4.5 million yuan has been invested in this festival, while the profits have also been gained. mr. li hopes that their festival can be combined with the 2008 olympic games. the success of the first festival gives them the confidence to make progress in the future.

secretary li also gives us the introduction to the aspects of sand sculpture: painting, sculpting and sports. the procedures are accumulating, carving and spraying of glues. in 2006, they have tried to make some sand sculptures and achieved success which laid foundation for the sculptures in 2007. it cost them three months to make plans. there are some characteristics of this festival: 1. there are the highest, longest and largest sculptures. 2. the sand sculptures are located in the southwest area. in addition, this exhibition has enhanced the fame of the sand island. in order to protect environment, some rubbish cans and warning signs have been put in the area and more than 300 students took part in the labor.

as the leaders, they have made a lot of investigations on the sand sculptures and held this festival. they have once lost their heart and wanted to give up when they encountered difficulties, but they tried their best to overcome the difficulties and achieved success. they have got a lot of experiences and confidence. they want to develop four tourist brand (1. dream sand island 2. atomic city suburb 3. kunlun cultural revolution 4. gold and silver beach and grassland), to quicken the development of natural tourism, eco-tourism, revolutionary tourism and tourism in ethnic groups.
