The legend of Heiquan Reservoir
  • There is “water-splashing Buddha”

The location of Heiquan Reservoir is an inspiring area of nature in the eyes of local people; a “water-splashing Buddha” “lives” here in the legend.
“There it is!” on the day we went to interview in Heiquan Reservoir, a local people pointed a huge cliff under the east side of reservoir dam and said to us. It is said that under the smooth cliff, there is a smiling Buddha sitting cross-legged among the lotus flowers, the face is serene and kind, and the Buddha is lifelike. But this Buddha is not revealed himself under normal circumstances only the clean spring is splashed on the rocks, it just appears, so it is known as "water-splashing Buddha". Taking into account the local legend, when building roads, dams, the construction company retained the position of "water-splashing Buddha" and built a "water-splashing Buddha" Temple, which have become a well-known scenic spot in Heiquan Reservoir.

  • The post house underwater in reservoir area

Heiquan Reservoir is very famous, but few people know an ancient military post house stands underwater in the Heiquan Reservoir area. The local people said when the excavation was started in Heiquan Reservoir, an ancient military post house was found, which is a circular building composed by seven or eight large houses with semi-subterranean civil structure. There is a moat around the house. Baoku watercourse next to the relic site has always been an important pass from Xiping to Zhangye since ancient time, so this post house was just built to guard the hub. According to analysis of unearthed cultural relics, the Tuyuhun, the Qiang and Tibetan people were lived together in Baoku area in Tang Dynasty, but now mainly Mongolian people lived near the Heiquan Reservoir.
