Application of Bamboo Cages
The advantages and technologies of Dujiangyan Project not only brought benefits to the local people, but also to other Chinese people. Early in the Han Dynasty (206 B.C.-220 A.D.), the method used in the Dujiangyan Project was widely spread in the whole nation. According to the historical records, in 29 B.C., there was a flood in the Yellow River which plagued 32 counties including 150 hectares of farmlands and 40000 houses, in which the deepest water amounted to 10 meters deep. The official who was responsible for preventing floods could not come up with any ideas and commited suicide at last. But to everyone's surprise, the floods was prevented by an ordinary man named Wang Yanshi from Ziyong, Sichuan Province. He asked people to make a lot of bamboo cages in which there were some blocks and put these cages in the river. It just took 36 days to control the flood. The emperor felt exalted and promoted Wang to be a high offcial. In fact, the method Wang used to control the flood was just that of Dujiangyan Project. It was just the project that made Wang adopt this method in harnessing the Yellow River.
