Tongjiang Tremella enjoys a good reputation in the world because it is of special thick and tender meat, easy to be stewed as well as it enjoys high nutritive and medicinal values.

The artificial cultivation of tremella began in the 20th year of the reign of Qing Emperor Guangxu. However, the tremella in early stage was in a half-wild state – the farmers cut down trees and then inoculated the trees with natural spores. In this way, 50 – 100g tremella could be got from every one hundred kilograms of trees. Tongjiang Tremella is famous Chinese specialty, which is abundant in variety of amino acid and trace elements as well as has high value for food and medical purpose. As the cradle of tremella, Tongjiang County enjoys a mild and humid climate which is very suitable for edible fungus. Tremella has been grown in Tongjiang for over 150 years. Now the county has more than 70,000 hectares of tremella trees which produce 600,000kg tremella every year. In addition, a variety of related products are produced by local people, such as tremella food, drink, health products and cosmetics, the annual production values of which are up to 0.1 billion Yuan. Tremella has become the mainstay of the county’s economy.
