TTT in the Eyes of a Western Teacher

After visit in western China, Mr. Sayling Wen decided to promote western development by internet. For years, people have been trapped in a painful cycle of poverty, ignorance and a lack of vision. People there are completely unfamiliar with the industrial civilization, let alone the advent of the information civilization. We have participated in TTT projects for more than two years, in which I deeply realize the importance of information.

As a teacher, I should have the duty to transfer knowledge and advanced skills. However, because of economic and historical reasons, the reality is not like what we supposed to be. In 1997, I was a teacher in a village school. There were 8 teachers and 200 students in six classes. In that year, an important figure died, and thus we wanted to organize students to watch TV program on CCTV. There was no TV in school, and we borrowed one from a villager. Another problem appeared. In villagers’ family, they used cable TV signal, but in school, we had no cable lines. None of the teachers could search the TV signals, as we had no TV at home. At last, a pupil skillfully finished the work. We were quite shamed.

Normally, the teacher should master the advanced skills and then teach the students. It’s said that Bill Gates rented a computer in a company, and thus had the opportunity to learn about computer. It should be the way education follows. In our region, the poverty has resulted in a dangerous gap between the incomes, living standards, the knowledge level and backward education standard. I have been a teacher for eleven years, but my life seems to be the same every day. I feel dull and sad. It looks to be no hope. I still believe that with hope, western regions can have a bright future.

There are thousands of youths in western China. The poverty and backwardness once stopped their path going forward. I am lucky. In Mar 15 of 2006, the principal forwarded me an email, in which I was invited to participate in TTT projects training program. I spent the whole year income in buying a computer and opened ADSL. From that day on, I got to know TTT, and worked as TTT member school administrator. Every day, I built the campus website from 19:00 to midnight. As I was not computer major, I had to learn everything from the very beginning. Though I felt quite busy, I was very happy.

Each time when I successfully applied students’ tuition fees, I was so excited and energetic. Since then, my life couldn’t be separated with internet. It was TTT that lightened my life. On Jun 24 of 2007, my mum was ill. After sending her to hospital in county, I went back to instruct students to make West China Story web pages. In the morning of Jun 28, my mum died. Though I felt sad, I couldn’t abandon the work. As ten students had worked hard for half a year, we expected to receive donation by the chance. It was a challenge to take part in 2008 Cyber Fair. Nor did I or the students know much about it. I learned computer skills in the evening and taught the students in daytime. One night, I went to bed at 3:00AM. Though I might not get award, I insisted to finish the web pages, which was also triumph.
