We learnt from Grandma Li that she began to study embroidery at only seven years old because of her poor family failed to afford her tuition in school, and under the pressure of an old saying that a lady unable to embroider would be looked down upon. Grandma Li started and sticked to it, even embroidered her own dowry. Then she held out lots of her embroideries and unfolded them one by one in front us. We were shocked at the delicate patterns and exquisite techniques of the coiled embroideries of the Tu nationality. On the embroidered clothes, there displayed the Chinese traditional patterns of "Chinese knot," "Sunflower," "Million words map" and the vivid "Dragon playing with a pearl." |
