The origin of Hunhuaizhang

Binggou used to be a site where “Hunhuaizhang” military base situated, which was a fortress built by Mengtian, a General of Qin Dynasty, 214 B.C, while he commanded his army northwards to fight Xiongnu (one of the nomadic minorities to the north of ancient China). Why the military base was called Hunhuaizhang? In Chinese, “huai” means the circle of arms and “zhang” means barrier. According to historical record, Hunhuaizhang military base was circled by Ku’er Gehe River, which seemed to be a baby in the mother’s arms.

	Visiting Hunhuaizhang

In 214BC, Qinshihuang emperor commanded Mengtian-a general to lead 300,000 soldiers to fight against Xiongnu (one of the nomadic minorities to the north of ancient China) in Binggou area. At the same time, they began to built military defense, which was called Hunhuaizhang. It lied in the southwest of Taole County, north to the city of Taole, 43 km far away, and west to Yinchuan City, 35 km far away. This was recorded in historical records in Sui, Tang, Song, Yuan, Ming and Qing Dynasties. In 1980s, the discovery of ancient tombs was the prove of Hunhuaizhang Site.
